There is a whole industry of self help and pop psychology books which persuade us that our thoughts can help us rule our universe - just stick to the secret steps for success. For this reason, it takes disillusionment and crisis before we finally admit to the fact that we need a different kind of help.

When Freud turned away from hypnosis to discover therapy, the key was simple: human beings are relational and can resolve subconscious fixations and compulsions in the therapeutic relationship. With incisive questions and reflective interpretations, the client could shift their psychological structures which governed their world of hurt, pain and wounding. Choices for life could be different, but it would take time and working through resistance.
